Few contrasts in Morocco are as stark as the one between Marrakech and Essaouira — and they are only 180 km apart. Marrakech is overwhelming in the best sense: 11 centuries of history packed into a walled medina of ochre mud-brick, Jemaa el-Fna square performing its daily theatre, souks selling everything from lanterns to live chickens, luxury riads hidden behind studded cedar doors. Essaouira sits on a windswept Atlantic headland and operates at an entirely different frequency: its rampart sea walls date to the 18th-century Portuguese fortifications, Gnawa musicians play on cobblestone squares, and the trade winds (the alizé) keep summer temperatures a pleasant 22°C while Marrakech bakes at 40°C. Both are unmissable; the question is temperament.
