Why Essaouira
Essaouira (Mogador on old maps) is the easiest coastal break in the country, and a natural stop on the Atlantic road that runs south from Casablanca through El Jadida and Oualidia. From a Casablanca arrival it's a scenic coastal drive, or three hours west of Marrakech if you head inland first. Its 18th-century ramparts have featured in Game of Thrones; its blue-and-white medina is small, walkable and far quieter than the imperial cities; and its windy beach is a year-round magnet for kite-surfers. It's also the heart of the argan-oil road and a short hop from the oyster lagoons of Oualidia.
What to see
Portuguese-built cannon walls overlooking the Atlantic, used as the city of Astapor in Game of Thrones.
Pick fish off the morning's catch and have it grilled in front of you at the port stalls — Morocco's freshest seafood, no question.
Visit a women's co-op on the road in from Marrakech and see argan oil pressed by hand from the kernels.
Long empty beaches south, and an oyster-farming lagoon north.

An overnight is much better than a day trip — the 3-hour drive each way leaves you only 4–5 hours on the coast. Two nights is ideal.
Yes but it's windy and the Atlantic is cool year-round. For warmer, calmer water head south to Sidi Kaouki or further to Agadir.
