Commissioned by King Hassan II and completed in 1993, it was designed by French architect Michel Pinseau. Part of the prayer hall extends above the ocean, echoing a Quranic verse about God's throne upon the water, and a glass floor section lets light onto the sea.
Non-Muslims can enter only on official guided tours, which run at set times during the day outside prayer hours. Tours take you into the vast prayer hall and often the ablutions level below; buy tickets at the on-site office and arrive early as times are limited.
Note the hand-carved cedar ceilings, intricate zellij tilework, Venetian-glass chandeliers and Moroccan marble and granite — the building was a showcase for thousands of the country's master artisans.
Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered for everyone; you will remove your shoes before entering the prayer hall (a bag is provided). Photography is generally allowed inside; follow your guide's directions and remain quiet and respectful.
Even outside tour hours the exterior and esplanade are spectacular, especially at sunset when the stone glows and the minaret light shows. Morning tours tend to be cooler and quieter.
