What is the Portuguese Cistern, and why is it famous?
It's a vaulted underground chamber built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, originally an arsenal or warehouse. A thin layer of water on the floor reflects the columns and the single shaft of daylight from the ceiling, creating a near-perfect mirror. Orson Welles filmed a scene there for his 1952 Othello, and it has drawn photographers and film-makers ever since.
Is El Jadida a UNESCO World Heritage site?
Yes. The Portuguese City of Mazagan — the fortified old town inside the ramparts, including the cistern and the church — was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004 as an outstanding example of a Portuguese fortified colonial sea-port. The cistern sits inside that protected old town.
