Why Tangier
Tangier sits where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, with Spain visible across the strait on a clear day. From a Casablanca arrival it is the easiest long-distance leg in the country: Africa's first high-speed train, Al Boraq, links Casablanca to Tangier in just over two hours. Long an international city — administered jointly by foreign powers from 1923 to 1956 — it drew Matisse, Paul Bowles, William Burroughs and the Rolling Stones. Today it's the polished northern counterpart to Casablanca: a 35-minute ferry from Tarifa, a 2h drive to Chefchaouen, and a 2h train onward to Fes.

Yes, especially if you're entering Morocco from Spain or building a northern loop (Tangier → Chefchaouen → Fes). From a Casablanca arrival it's the country's quickest intercity hop on the Al Boraq high-speed train, and it's the most cosmopolitan of Morocco's old cities.
Two nights is the sweet spot — one day for the kasbah and medina, one for Cap Spartel and a long lunch.
