Why Casablanca

Casablanca is Morocco's largest city and the country's principal international gateway, built around Mohammed V (CMN) — the busiest airport in the kingdom and the hub from which almost every Morocco trip begins. This is not the imperial-romantic Morocco of postcards; it is a confident, working Atlantic metropolis whose 1920s–1950s downtown is one of the world's great concentrations of art-deco and Mauresque architecture, and whose waterfront is dominated by the staggering Hassan II Mosque, built partly over the sea. Because CMN sits on the national rail network — and the airport has its own station — Casablanca is where you arrive, get your bearings and branch out: trains and private transfers radiate from here to Rabat, Marrakech, Fes, Tangier and the Atlantic coast. We treat the city as a destination in its own right, not just a transit point, with layover tours sized to fit a half-day connection or a full first day on the ground.

What to see

Highlights of Casablanca.

01

Hassan II Mosque

The world's third-largest mosque, its 210m minaret rising over the Atlantic and part of its prayer hall cantilevered above the waves. One of the very few mosques in Morocco non-Muslims may enter — guided tours run several times daily and are the single must-see of any Casablanca stop.

02

Mauresque & art-deco downtown

Place Mohammed V, the Wilaya clock tower, the restored Cinema Rialto and street after street of 1920s–1950s facades blending European art-deco with Moroccan Mauresque detail — a walkable open-air museum of the protectorate era.

03

Quartier Habous & the medina

The 'new medina' of Habous, built in the 1930s, with its arcaded lanes, olive and book stalls and the Mahkama du Pacha, plus the older walled medina near the port for a quick souk fix close to the cruise and ferry terminals.

04

Corniche, Ain Diab & Rick's Café

The Atlantic boardwalk at Ain Diab with its beach clubs and sea-pools, and Rick's Café — the bar built to evoke the 1942 film — for a drink before your onward train or flight.

FAQ

Casablancacommon questions.

Is Casablanca worth visiting on arrival?+

Yes — as your gateway city it's the ideal place to recover from the flight and ease into Morocco. The Hassan II Mosque alone justifies a stop, and the art-deco downtown and Corniche make a rewarding half-day or full first day before you continue to Marrakech, Fes or the coast.

Can I do a Casablanca tour on a layover?+

Yes — our layover tours are timed to your connection. With a four-hour stop we cover the Hassan II Mosque and a downtown drive; with a full day we add Habous, the Corniche and Rick's Café. We collect you at CMN and return you with margin for check-in.

Should I fly into Casablanca or Marrakech?+

Casablanca (CMN) is the country's main long-haul hub and the natural arrival point, with the most international connections and onward rail. Marrakech (RAK) is closer to the southern circuit. We often book the open-jaw: into CMN, out of RAK.
